The United States women’s soccer team appeared to be the heavy gold medal favorite to open the Paris Olympics in 2024, but the test will be much tougher in Game 1. 2, when it faces Germany on Saturday (3 p. m. ET).

The USWNT cruised to a 3-0 win over Zambia, who played with just 10 players for 55 minutes, with Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson (twice) scoring in Emma Hayes’ competitive match as head coach. They will once again be without Jaedyn Shaw after the 19-year-old was injured in education this week. Sophia Smith, who started the opener but was replaced just before halftime as a precaution, is available.
Germany entered the Paris 2024 Olympics as one of the few groups expected to compete for gold, and also showed its expectations in its opening match. In the 3-0 victory over Australia, Marina Hegering, Lea Schuller and Jule Brand scored goals for Horst Hrubesch’s team.
