Ukraine launched a stunning attack on Russia with troops and armored vehicles, Russian officials and independent military analysts said Wednesday, in what could be one of the largest Ukrainian incursions on Russian soil since more than two years of war.

The assault, which began Tuesday in the Kursk region of western Russia, has resulted in heavy fighting, according to battlefield images verified by independent military analysts and Russian statements.

Videos verified by the New York Times show armored vehicles hit several miles from Russia, and Moscow said it had sent troops and fighter jets to respond. Valery V. Gerasimov, commander of Russian forces fighting in Ukraine, said the advance of Ukrainian troops had stalled Wednesday night, while pro-Kremlin army bloggers said Ukrainian forces had captured several settlements near the border.

“Today alarming news is coming from the Kursk region,” Igor Artamonov, governor of Russia’s Lipetsk region, which borders the Kursk region, said Wednesday. “The Kiev regime is attacking our borders. “

By Wednesday night, Ukrainian troops appeared to have pushed several kilometers into Russian territory, an analyst said, and Russian officials said fighting was continuing.

The reports may not have been independently verified and the Ukrainian government has not commented on the attack. Two Ukrainian military spokesmen did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
