Bolton has faced threats from Iran for years, an alleged plot to assassinate him in 2021, and the Justice Department later charged a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps over the plot in 2022. Bolton served as Trump’s national security advisor between 2018 and 2019, before Trump ousted him because they “disagreed strongly” on policy issues.
