The cast of The Acolyte doesn’t live in a bubble and is well aware of the backlash from venomous fans, many of whom have resorted to racist attacks against others like its lead, Amandla Stenberg, who plays twins Osha and Mae in the program.
This prompted Stenberg to respond with a. . . very response, a music video she wrote, choreographed, and released on June 19, addressing racism through song and dance. We don’t see this every day. Among the questions he raises in the video:
She talks about the 2018 interview on The Hate U Give that went viral alongside the release of The Acolyte, where she says the purpose is to “make other white people cry. ” The small clip A) presented it as being about The Acolyte, which was not the case and years before, and B) lacks context, which she explains in this video, which is that other black people cried over the film because it made them feel heard , and other white people were crying because they see those black people. other people like other people, through the film.
“If you rely on misinformation, that tells me you’re afraid of the truth,” he says.
She explains how the word “woke” was stolen and appropriated for harassment and “clickbait,” when it was originally a term created through the black network to recognize intolerance around the world.
The acolyte
He also denounces the sleuths who “propagate” questionable reports on knowledge and indicators. I suppose it may simply refer to the rating comments bombarded by critics. I have talked about them, but in the sense that they have constituted a harassment mechanism. Others used it as evidence of the “failure” of the program.
The video probably wasn’t very funny. I searched to locate a “clean” copy of the video that I could just pause and rewind to see the lyrics, which you can’t do on Instagram, and when I looked one up on YouTube, all I was given were dozens and dozens of videos of the very people it addresses calling her “teeth grinding” and that she “plays the victim” and whatever else you expect from them.
That’s another kind of reaction, of course, Stenberg is rarely the only actor to talk about it. Dafne Keen, who plays Jecki, commented on Instagram “Wokelyte Unit!”as an ironic reaction to the situation.
So far we’re only halfway through the series and the chatter, which Stenberg focuses on, has been excruciating, from demanding debates about canon (what year was this alien born?) to racism and literal harassment and probably an entire YouTube industry. Reaction videos from pumping. angry/mocking to the show, and now to Stenberg herself as a result of this. I wouldn’t expect anything to replace in the next 4 weeks, at this rate.
