This year has been smart for me musically, especially compared to last year, when I went almost 4 months without attending a concert, not through choice. However, I made up for it in 2024.
I attended 55 concerts and festivals this year. I’ve danced to some of my favorite artists, as well as the new flavor makers I’ve recently discovered. I’ve hit the dance floors of 4 music festivals, venues, and a personal island in Belize. I’ve even been on stages at some of the biggest clubs in New York.
I listened to 19,355 hours of music this year, according to my Spotify Wrapped. I pay attention to music by taking the subway, walking in my space in New York, traveling, getting ready for a night out, cooking, cleaning, and more. I also looked to pay attention to Four Tet’s entire catalog of albums, dating back to 1999, which gave me enough music to lose on.
This year I found it easier to explore new albums, mainly thanks to my Spotify Daylist. I have a bad habit of listening to my favorite songs on loop, but the ability of the music streaming service has helped me solve this problem. Without it, I wouldn’t have rediscovered some of my most productive songs from over ten years ago, I wouldn’t have discovered new remixes of songs I love, I wouldn’t have fallen in love with new artists and records, I wouldn’t have immersed myself in genres outside of my same old behavior listening and much more. One of my favorite things in music is dancing to it, however, its discovery took the forefront of the tier this year, especially with the albums.
We’re in an era driven by singles, as artists are pressured to constantly pump them out. But where has the appreciation for albums gone? I prefer them over singles for numerous reasons, but mainly because long plays tell a story. Maybe you’ll enter a fictional fantasy world. Perhaps you’ll delve into the creative world the sound designer was inspired by. Or, possibly, you’ll get caught up in a heart-wrenching story so relatable that you’re experiencing some of the same emotions the artist had while they were writing the LP.
Some albums tell an incalculable story, while others can lead to an adventure through the artist’s sound evolution or even detail a universal life experience, such as dealing with the loss of a enjoyment. However, LP says it differently.
