Vladimir Putin’s army is gaining ground in Ukraine but is suffering from heavy casualties and officer shortages, British defence chiefs say.
They also warned that Russian forces will most likely acquire more territory in the coming weeks.
In its latest intelligence update, the Ministry of Defense in London said: “In July 2024, Russian forces (FGR) carried out non-stop attacks in central Donetsk province.
“The FGR is advancing westwards, taking control of several villages and approaching the logistics center of Pokrovsk.
“The RGF has also advanced north into the city of Niu York, which has been on the front line since 2014. The city is almost disputed between the RGF and the Ukrainian Armed Forces. “
The report adds: “Russia will most likely continue to make tactical advances in the coming weeks.
“However, its overall operational capacity remains limited due to several factors in addition to a limited, peak attrition rate and officer shortage. »
Putin may seize more land, but at the cost of hundreds of thousands of Russian infantrymen killed or wounded in his attack on four regions in eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces are suffering heavy losses, with tens of thousands of civilians killed and wounded in the war introduced by Putin in February 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that he had visited the frontline domain of Vovchansk in the northeastern region of Kharkiv, near the border with Russia, where Moscow’s forces are seeking to break through.
Russian troops opened a new front in the north of the region in May, temporarily conducting raids of up to six miles.
The Ukrainian army then halted the offensive, one of the main axes of which was heading towards the city of Vovchansk.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed in recent days to have taken two villages about 32 kilometers northwest of Avdiivka, in Donetsk, the city that the Russian army captured in February after a long battle.
This victory is the Kremlin’s latest marvelous triumph in this war that is now in its third year.
Russia’s attack, driven by its abundant merits in terms of infantrymen and weapons, has continually forced the Ukrainians to retreat from their defensive positions to capture or kill.
At the same time, the Russian Navy has introduced planned exercises involving the maximum of its fleet in the Arctic and Pacific Oceans, as well as in the Baltic and Caspian Seas, the Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.
The Russian exercises, involving 20,000 soldiers and three hundred ships, will test the readiness and functions of the navy at all levels, the ministry said.
British defense chiefs say more than 20 Russian ships have been hit by Ukrainian attacks, forcing the Black Sea Fleet to withdraw from annexed Crimea.
