To many, Justin Baldoni is arguably the most well-known in his career so far for his memorable five seasons on the beloved TV series Jane the Virgin, but in recent years, Baldoni has been very busy expanding his opportunities in Hollywood, leading with a preference for telling stories that have a lasting impact on audiences from all walks of life.
He’s even gone to the camera, directing two feature films in recent years: Five Feet Apart in 2019, released theatrically, and Clouds in 2020, which have become Disney’s first acquisition for Disney Plus with his co-founded independent production studio, Wayfarer Studios. Formation
As president of Wayfarer, Baldoni’s new project, It Ends With Us, now hits the big screen. Based on the best-selling book by Colleen Hoover, Baldoni has played a pivotal role in what he says was a five-year film adaptation process: from landing Wayfarer to choosing to partner with Sony and becoming the director of the movie. and in the end starring opposite Blake Lively as main character Lily Bloom’s confusing love interest, Ryle Kincaid.
So how did Baldoni handle his numerous day jobs during the process of making the film It Ends With Us, i. e. having to be a director and an actor simultaneously?
“It’s very complicated,” Baldoni told me during my recent stop at his workplace at Wayfarer Studios in Beverly Hills, California. “Many of these paintings are done before production begins. A lot of it was painting characters and figuring out who Ryle was and how to live in that body, so I can put that aside and then focus on running the day. So once “Action!” He was called, I was able to enter that component of me where he lived. I wouldn’t want to create this total character; that was really important. The other thing is that I like collaboration, so I’m a filmmaker who likes to know how something happens to the people around me. I believe that art deserves to be expressed collaboratively.
As for working alongside Lively, not only as an on-screen partner, but also as a producer on the project, Baldoni said of Lively, “She’s an artistic force and has some really clever concepts. I had the ability to see things” in certain places that I couldn’t see. It’s the most productive concept that wins – – I think that’s how wonderful art is born. She touched on each and every facet of this production when she joined, and I in particular. In fact, I think he has taken a step forward in each and every one of the facets.
He then complimented his other It Ends With Us co-stars, adding Jenny Slate, who plays his on-screen sister Alyssa, saying of Slate’s character and performance, “His purpose is not comic relief, it’s lightness and lightness. She’s such a brilliant designer. He just left it out of the park.

Baldoni also praised actor Brandon Sklenar, who plays Atlas, Lily’s first love, who reappears in her life years later. He said of Sklenar: “He was so brilliant and so good. One of the first things we shot was the end of the movie, when he tells her that he loves her. I just don’t forget to hunt out there and everyone was like crying, just shocked. His chemical check was exploding. He has a calmness that is actually rare as an actor and presence, and it’s hilarious. It was a great dream to direct him because he followed instructions very well and was very willing to check anything. I’m so excited about everything this movie will do for him.
In this book-turned-enjoyable movie, Ryle’s character appears very composed and self-assured on the outside, but does not quietly address beyond the trauma, which in turn leads him to lash out against tactics that harm others. your loved ones.

In fact, Baldoni has spent the last few years speaking very openly about his own religious and emotional journey, to address what masculinity means in our modern society and how we can all improve each other in the future. In 2021, Baldoni wrote and published his e-book Man Enough and also hosted The Man Enough Podcast the same year with his Wayfarer team.
Baldoni said: “When it comes to my paintings about masculinity, there are so many men who come away with unhealed wounds and who don’t realize that they are suffering so much, that they are hurting the people they love the most. I had to do it. Find tactics to engage with it and engage with it, and as someone healing my own trauma, I’ve been making very serious paintings for years.
As for how his paintings have benefited from the way he best approached his portrayal of Ryle on screen, Baldoni said, “It allowed me to play a character, not as a villain, but as someone who’s suffering, because I need men who I’ve possibly gone through that trauma, who don’t take into consideration, to see what happens when you make a specific selection: the possible selections Ryle has made and how much he can hurt everyone and themselves. Maybe after seeing the movie, they’ll make another selection.
As I concluded my verbal exchange with Baldoni, I asked this kid and ever-evolving arts professional what he would say to Ryle, after betting him on It Ends With Us, if he could.

Baldoni said: “Compared to what happened to him as a child, I would say: it’s not your fault. I would say that if I had the opportunity to communicate with him now after the movie, I would say: do the work. There is nothing more important: getting the job done.
