Russian president Vladimir Putin on Friday called former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh – who died on Thursday – an outstanding statesman. Putin said the Congress leader accomplished a lot in promoting India’s economic development and asserting its interests on the world stage.
Manmohan Singh, an economist-turned-politician, is credited with initiating economic reforms in 1991, which paved the way for India’s immediate development. He served as Prime Minister during a 10-year era during which India’s economic expansion exceeded 8 percent.
The India-Russia strategic partnership was enhanced to the status of “special and privileged strategic partnership” during the Russian President’s stopover in India in December 2010, when Manmohan Singh was Prime Minister.
“As a minister and when he held other high-ranking positions, he did a lot to publicize India’s economic progress and assert its interests on the global stage,” Putin said.
Putin, whose country is recently embroiled in a war with Ukraine, said Manmohan Singh had played a key role in strengthening ties between India and Russia.
“He also made a fundamental contribution to strengthening the friendly ties between our two countries, bringing them to the level of a special and privileged strategic partnership,” the Russian president said.
Putin spoke about his talks with Singh.
“I had the opportunity to speak at several events with this extraordinary man. “We will do it,” he said.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya remembered the former prime minister for “his efforts, which laid the foundation” for the advancement of bilateral relations between both nations.
“Following the death of H. E. Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, on December 26, Prime Minister ISHIBA and FM IWAYA respectively sent letters of condolence to H. E. H. E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and H. E. Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, expressing his sincere condolences and paying tribute to Dr. Singh for his efforts, which form the basis for progress between Japan and India today,” the Japanese Ministry of External Affairs said in X.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel also expressed their condolences over the death of the former minister.
Macron said India had lost a “great man” and France a “true friend” and offered his condolences to Singh’s family and the rest of the people of India.
In a post shared on X, Macron stated, “India has lost a great man, and France a true friend, in the person of Dr. Manmohan Singh. He had devoted his life to his country. Our thoughts are with his family and the people of India.”
Ramchandra Paudel termed the former Prime Minister as India’s “visionary leader” and expressed sympathy for the government and people of India and the bereaved family members.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of the former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. Dr. Singh is a visionary leader of India. I extend our deepest condolences to the Government and the rest of the people of India and to the circle of the bereaved. of relatives,” Paudel published in X.
