Hong Kong officials said Saturday that they were “very disappointed” with Canada’s direct decision to suspend its excitement treaty with the Chinese-ruled city and again criticized Washington for “interference” in its affairs.
This week, Beijing imposed a new national security law in the former British colony, despite protests from Hong Kong citizens and Western countries, hitting China’s freer city and a primary economic center on a more authoritarian path.
“The Canadian government will have to comply with the rule of law and with the world why it allows fugitives not to assume their legal responsibilities,” Hong Kong security leader John Lee said at a radio demonstration Saturday.
Lee was very disappointed and strongly opposed Canada’s decision, he added, as it shocks that the rule of law policy would succeed.
The comments followed Canada’s on Friday that it postponed the treaty with Hong Kong under hot law and could also give more flavor to the city’s immigration.
Canada would also ban the export of sensitive pieces of the army to Hong Kong, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters.
On Saturday’s program, Hong Kong Justice Secretary Teresa Cheng said she was disappointed and expressed her excessive regret over Canada’s decision, adding that her concept that it might be more likely to probably outside foreign law.
On Friday, a Hong Kong government spokesman called a Bill passed by the Senate “totally unacceptable” to penalize banks doing business with Chinese officials implementing the blazing law.
“We reiterate that a large “apple sanction imposed by law will not create a duty for economic establishments under Hong Kong law,” the spokesman said in a statement.
He advised to interfere immediately in Hong Kong’s internal affairs, adding that Beijing, in addition to the city’s government, can also take countermeasures if necessary.
