The Head of State will share a Christmas meal with the French army deployed in Djibouti, before traveling to the Ethiopian capital for the inauguration of the National Palace.

For the classic New Year’s Eve, the head of state chose Djibouti this year to “show the nation’s recognition” to infantrymen deployed abroad, the presidency said. He will have to meet in situ with his counterpart from Djibouti, Ismaël Omar Guelleh, to discuss the situation in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa, specifically in Somalia, prey to conflicts and attacks through Chabab, by radical Islamists, as well as in Sudan. , ravaged for more than a year and part of a civil war.
They will also discuss the renewed defense partnership in July between the two countries. The French base in Djibouti, which is home to 1,500 troops, is the largest French contingent and the only one that will not be affected by the historic easing of sailing planned on the African continent after a series of disappointments in the Sahel in recent years. The renewed treaty reflects “the excellence of the relations that prevail between our two countries, as well as the convergence of our strategic interests,” the Elysee Palace said at the Time conference.
This stop in France marks Emmanuel Macron’s stated preference for promoting new African partnerships, freed from the colonial history that has poisoned – to the point of breaking – Paris’ relations with its former colonies in recent years.
