A common theory about Donald Trump’s appeal is that white teams feel they are lagging behind while other groups are making progress. He pointed out that sentiment and spoke about the concerns of those constituents.
It turns out that those considerations are uncovered in genuine economic changes, a new study by Harvard researchers shows. The researchers analyzed the censuses and tax records of 57 million young people to read about the skills of individuals in the middle and upper categories (their mobility) over two recent generations. They found that the scenario advanced among blacks and deteriorated among poor whites, as shown in this graph via my colleague Ashley Wu:
